You fall behind the times if you have never worked with a coach

In the XXI century it is impossible to be truly successful if you do not have a coach. Everybody has coaches: sports teams, winners of “Formula 1”, billionaires, stars, and successful CEOs. If you have never had a coaching session – you’re a dinosaur. Now the coach is easy to find, not only in a capital, but also in any provincial town. But do not rush to google the phrase “I am looking for a coach”, and read to the end, for you not to get to a fraud.

From this article you’ll know:

  • Who is the coach (history, definition).
  • What’s the difference between a coach and a psychologist, trainer and consultant.
  • How to distinguish a coach from a fraud.
  • When customers turn to coaches.
  • How coaching may be useful for a client.
  • What is the usual coaching session.
  • How many coaches earn.
  • Could coaching be useful for you.

  • What is needed to become a coach.

Often people ask:

  • What is a coach? Is that a coach for personal growth?
  • And how do they work with clients? Do they probably give them the advice?
  • Is it true that the customers pay $ 100for one coaching session?

“Real coaches do not teach anything at all.”

But probably all are agree: coaches earn good money. And it’s really true. Coaching sessions even held by beginning coaches should cost $ 50, but the experienced coaches take from 100 to 200 dollars. But there are others that can take 500 or even 1,000 dollars, but it is usually a very well-known coach who works with the owners of business, and this work is limited to a series of intensive coaching sessions, between which a pause in 6-12 months or occasional meetings once a month.

But what is most striking, coaches generally do not teach anything. They do not say what decisions to make, do not make the work better. And that is no less striking, they speak with a customer not about his past, but, as a rule, about the future.

Let’s start with a definition.

What is coaching?

The official version:

Coachingis a training or development process via which an individual is supported while achieving a specific personal or professional competence result or goal. The individual receiving coaching may be referred to as coachee. Occasionally, the term coaching may be applied to an informal relationship between two individuals where one has greater experience and expertise than the other and offers advice and guidance as the other goes through a learning process, but coaching differs from mentoring by focusing upon competence specifics, as opposed to general overall development.

Coaching – is a special kind of job of coach with a client that helps a client achieve outstanding results faster, happier and easier than he would work for his achievement.

A bit of history

Timothy Gallwey

It all started with Timothy Gallwey, the author of the concept of inner game, which was the basis of coaching. First the concept is described in the book “The Inner Game of Tennis» published in 1974. This date can be considered as the date of birth of coaching.

The idea of inner game came to him while working as an instructor on tennis.

Timothy Gallwey

An American coach, author of a method to improve personal and professional effectiveness of the “inner game”.

The enemy in the head is much more dangerous than the opponent on the other side. The purpose of the “inner game” is to reduce any interference in the opening and implementation of full human potential.

John Whitmore

Author of the book “Coaching of High Performance”, published in 1992.”
He developed the idea of Galway and applied them to business and management. John Whitmore is a British racing driver, one of the leading UK business coaches, creator of the popular model of coaching GROW.

Thomas Leonard

Considered the creator of coaching in the form in which we know it today.
Thomas has been a finance consultant. One day he noticed that the most successful of his clients ask him a personal business advice. Business leaders and first persons of the company were interested in knowing how to respond quickly to the changing economic environment, how to effectively manage employees, and someone just could not formulate their future professional goals.

Here are just a small part of the Thomas’s achievements:

He’s the University of coaches founder (Coach University –, the International Coach Federation (ICF), the International Association of Certified Coaches (International Association of Certified Coaches – IAC) and the project
He developed 28 personal and professional programs.
He’s the author of six books for coaches and of 14 internal exclusive works for students of the University of coaching.

How coaching was developing .

  • From 70s to mid-80s – the stage of conception of coaching in the United States.
  • Mid 80’s – spreading of coaching in the United States.
  • Mid 80’s – coaching was intensified in Germany.
  • End of 80th – in Germany staff began to develop by coaching.
  • Early 90s – in Europe and the United States coaching was subdivided on specializations.
  • From 2002 to the present day – in-depth phase of professionalization.

That’s how coaching is distinguished from other types of help and counseling:

Thus, coaching – is a way of counseling, in which a client is an expert and a coach only asks questions.

When customers should turn to a coach?

The range of issues that customers turn to a coach is really big. Here are some of them:

  • Business planning, budgeting, goal setting.
  • Establishing a balance between work and personal life.
  • Solutions for difficult situations.
  • Achieving maximum performance at work.
  • Business solutions and personal problems.
  • Key decisions and strategies.
  • Sales increase.
  • Control over your life, instead of letting other people control you.
  • Increase the profitability of company.
  • Remove the adrenaline of my life.
  • Accelerate the development of yourself.
  • Develop your own way of growth.

What is the usual coaching session?

A regular coaching session lasts 60-90 minutes. If the meetings frequent, they may be reduced to 30-45 minutes. Meetings are usually held in a cafe or restaurant, as well as at the workplace of the client (in his office). Less often the client comes to the coach’s office.

Before coaching session the client makes the request – a kind of task for the session. During the session, the client with a coach finds a solution to his request.

The result of a coaching session is a clear understanding of the client what to do to achieve his goals, and a plan of action, usually for a week.

During the session, the coach asks the customer questions and uses a variety of coaching tools.

A typical coaching session is based on the model of GROW, invented by Whitmore:

  • Goal – what is your goal? What do you want to achieve?
  • Reality – Describe your situation now.
  • Options – What are the options to achieve the goal? Who can help you? What do you need?
  • Will – what to do to achieve the goal? What are the next steps? When you can do it?

One of the tasks of a coach is to raise the level of the client. That is to help the client set higher goals, so that he gets more in life.

This is a tool of comprehensive assessment of the client’s life and of finding weaknesses in him.

Here 30 questions. For each question you have to answer “yes” or “no.”

Can I become a coach?

You can feel free to give a positive answer to this question, if you can answer “yes” to all of the questions:

  • Do you want to help other people achieve their goals?
  • Are you ready to become a model for them and for this to achieve your goals in different spheres of life?
  • Are you willing to spend time to study and practice the basic coaching (over 100 hours)?
  • Do you have time for coaching sessions after graduation?
  • Are you ready to learn, practice, hold sessions in the presence of others, get feedback from your coach?

What is needed to be a coach?

The algorithm is as follows:

  1. Select a school that is right for you by location, time of course and has been certified by ICF.
  2. Gather up the money for the course (1 000-2 000 dollars).
  3. Complete the course (on average 1-3 months of intensive classroom training 2-3 days per week or 10-12 months of online lessons once a week for 60-90 minutes).
  4. Start conducting free coaching sessions. It is necessary to hold at least 100 hours.
  5. Begin to tell others that you are a coach.
  6. Create your own site.
  7. Start attracting customers.

What did coaching give me?

After the course I already had clear objectives in all spheres of life. In addition, my staff noticed changes in my management style, and our relationship has become much better.

To get a certificate I needed the practice of coaching, so I began to coach all the friends. Many of them very quickly achieved their objectives. One of my subordinates after months of coaching went to a higher position in another company with a two times higher salary. 🙂

I realized that coaching works like magic: it is enough to set a goal and realize the way to achieve it, how do you automatically start to work on it.

I got a certificate and began to coach inactive clients who came to me mainly on the recommendation. Very quickly I had got a plenty of clients. But the main priority for me is my career: I want to become a CEO in 5 years, so I don’t spend much time on coaching. For me, it is rather an opportunity to earn pocket money on my favorite toys (phone, laptop) at the weekend.

What it gave me:

  • Achieving of a number of goals (career, health, salary).
  • Experience of managing people in a more democratic style.
  • Meeting new and interesting people.
  • Awareness of my mission.
  • A more balanced life.
  • Improving relationships with others.
